  • Biogenic Sedimentary Rocks: Understanding Chalk and Coal
Chalk and coal are examples of biogenic sedimentary rocks.

    Here's why:

    * Biogenic means "formed from living organisms."

    * Chalk is primarily made up of the fossilized remains of microscopic marine organisms called coccolithophores.

    * Coal is formed from the remains of ancient plants, primarily trees, that accumulated in swamps and were buried under sediment.

While both are sedimentary rocks, they are classified as biogenic because their formation relies heavily on the accumulation of organic matter.
