Fermentation does not occur during cellular respiration. Rather, fermentation is an alternative process to cellular respiration that occurs when there is insufficient oxygen available to carry out cellular respiration. During fermentation, glucose is broken down into smaller molecules without the use of oxygen, and a small amount of ATP is produced.
