The first thinker to develop a sun-centered model of the universe was Aristarchus of Samos.

While his ideas were largely ignored for centuries, he is credited with proposing the heliocentric model around the 3rd century BC. This was long before Copernicus, who is often mistakenly attributed with the discovery.
