  • Mao Zedong's Embalming: The Story of China's Preserved Leader
The preservation of Mao Zedong's body began shortly after his death on September 9, 1976.

*A team of Soviet embalmers was flown in to assist with the process, which took several months.

*Mao's body was first placed in a sealed coffin filled with formalin, a chemical used to preserve tissue.

*The coffin was then placed in a temperature-controlled chamber and exposed to a vacuum, which helped to remove air from the body and prevent decomposition.

*Mao's body was then injected with a variety of chemicals, including glycerin, alcohol, and formaldehyde, to further preserve the tissues.

*The final step was to apply a layer of wax to the body to seal in the chemicals and protect it from further deterioration.

*The preserved body of Mao Zedong is currently on display in a mausoleum in Tiananmen Square in Beijing.**
