  • Lipstick Tree Habitat: Understanding Rainforest Understory Conditions
The "lipstick tree" is actually a name used for several different plants, but the most common one is Bixa orellana, also known as annatto.

Annatto trees are found in the understory layer of the rainforest. This layer is below the canopy, but above the forest floor. It's characterized by medium-sized trees and shrubs that tolerate partial shade.

Here's why the understory makes a good home for annatto trees:

    * Sunlight: While they need some sunlight, they can't tolerate the full sun of the canopy. The dappled light of the understory is perfect for them.

    * Humidity: The understory is a very humid environment, which is ideal for these tropical plants.

    * Competition: The understory is less crowded than the canopy, giving annatto trees a better chance to thrive.

So, while lipstick trees can be found in other areas, in rainforests, they live comfortably in the understory layer.
