  • Canyon vs. Gorge: Understanding Steep-Sided Valleys
A valley with very steep sides is called a canyon or a gorge.

    Here's the difference:

    * Canyon: Typically refers to a deep, narrow valley with steep, often vertical sides, carved out by a river over a long period. The Grand Canyon is a famous example.

    * Gorge: Similar to a canyon, but often smaller and narrower. Gorges are frequently formed by rivers or glaciers and can have a more winding or meandering shape.

While both canyons and gorges have steep sides, the term "canyon" usually implies a more significant depth and scale.
