Here's why:

* Mineral: A naturally occurring, solid, inorganic substance with a definite chemical composition and a specific crystal structure. Diamonds fit this definition.

* Ore: A rock that contains enough of a valuable mineral to make it profitable to mine. While diamonds are valuable, we don't call the rock they're found in an "ore".

So, diamonds are valuable minerals, but they're not ores themselves.
