There are two main types of surface waves:
* Love waves: These waves cause horizontal shaking and travel faster than Rayleigh waves. They are named after A.E.H. Love, a British mathematician who studied them.
* Rayleigh waves: These waves are a combination of longitudinal and transverse motion, creating a rolling motion similar to ocean waves. They are named after Lord Rayleigh, who predicted their existence.
Both types of surface waves are responsible for much of the damage caused by earthquakes, as they have larger amplitudes and travel farther than body waves (which travel through the Earth's interior).
