    * Dating fossils: Fossils found in rock layers can also be used to determine relative age. If a particular fossil is found in a specific layer, and that same fossil is found in another layer at a different location, geologists can infer that the two layers are roughly the same age.

    Important Note: The law of superposition applies to undisturbed rock sequences. If the layers have been folded, tilted, or overturned, then the order of the layers may not reflect their true age.
