  • Understanding Earth's Surface Processes: Erosion Explained
The name for the ways Earth materials are moved around on the surface is erosion.

Erosion is the process of wearing away and transporting soil, rock, and other materials by natural forces such as:

    * Wind: Wind carries dust, sand, and even larger particles, carving out canyons and shaping deserts.

    * Water: Rivers, streams, and ocean waves erode the land, creating valleys, deltas, and coastlines.

    * Ice: Glaciers carve out valleys, transport rocks, and deposit them as moraines.

    * Gravity: Gravity causes landslides, rockfalls, and soil creep, moving material downhill.

While weathering is the process of breaking down materials, erosion is the process of moving those broken-down materials.
