  • California's Volcanic Mountains: A Geological Guide
There are many mountains in California that were formed by volcanic eruptions! Here are a few examples:

    * Mount Shasta: This iconic peak is a stratovolcano, meaning it's formed from layers of lava flows and ash. It's the second highest peak in California and one of the most prominent volcanoes in the Cascade Range.

    * Lassen Peak: This is the largest active volcano in the contiguous United States. It's known for its unique "plug dome" shape, formed by thick, viscous lava that solidified in the volcanic vent.

    * Mount Lassen: This is another active volcano in the Lassen Volcanic National Park. It's actually a complex of volcanic domes and cones, with a history of eruptions and hydrothermal activity.

    * Medicine Lake Volcano: This is a massive shield volcano, the largest in the Cascade Range. It's not as visually impressive as some other volcanoes, but it's still an active volcanic system with a long history of eruptions.

These are just a few examples, and there are many other mountains and volcanic features in California, including the volcanic peaks of the Sierra Nevada and the numerous smaller volcanoes and lava flows scattered throughout the state.
