These plates are large, rigid slabs of the Earth's lithosphere (the crust and uppermost mantle) that move relative to each other. They are responsible for many geological phenomena, including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountain formation.
There are also a number of smaller plates, such as the Caribbean Plate and the Nazca Plate.
