  • Sublimation: Understanding the Solid-to-Gas Phase Change
The phase change in which a substance goes directly from solid to gas without passing through the liquid phase is called sublimation.

Some common examples of sublimation include:

    * Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) sublimating into carbon dioxide gas.

    * Mothballs (solid naphthalene) slowly disappearing as they sublimate into gaseous naphthalene.

    * Frozen water (ice) sublimating into water vapor in a cold, dry environment.
