  • Sublimation: Understanding the Solid-to-Gas Phase Change
The phase change that changes a solid directly to a gas or vapor without going through a liquid phase is called sublimation.

Here are some examples of sublimation:

    * Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) sublimating into carbon dioxide gas. This is a common example you might see at a grocery store or in a science experiment.

    * Mothballs slowly disappearing over time. Mothballs are often made of naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene, which sublime at room temperature.

    * Frozen water (ice) sublimating in a cold, dry environment. This is how freeze-drying works.
