  • Acid Rain Formation: Sulfur Dioxide and Nitrogen Oxides
The two main pollutants that react with water to produce acid rain are:

    1. Sulfur dioxide (SO2): This gas is released primarily from burning fossil fuels like coal. In the atmosphere, it reacts with oxygen and water to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4).

    2. Nitrogen oxides (NOx): These gases are also produced by burning fossil fuels, as well as from vehicle emissions. They react with water and oxygen to form nitric acid (HNO3).

Both sulfuric acid and nitric acid are strong acids that can be carried by rain, snow, fog, and even dust particles, contributing to acid rain.
