  • Lichen: The Plant That Facilitates Chemical Weathering
The plant that produces acids that aid in chemical weathering is lichen.

    Here's why:

    * Lichen's Symbiotic Relationship: Lichen is a composite organism formed by a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an alga.

    * Acid Production: The fungal component of lichen produces weak acids, primarily lichenic acid, as a byproduct of its metabolism.

    * Chemical Weathering: These acids react with the minerals in rocks, breaking them down into smaller particles. This process is called biochemical weathering.

    How it works:

    1. Acid Secretion: Lichen secretes acids onto the rock surface.

    2. Mineral Dissolution: The acids dissolve the minerals in the rock, creating small cavities and crevices.

    3. Erosion: Water and wind can then more easily erode the weakened rock.

Note: Lichen is a pioneer species, meaning it can grow on bare rock surfaces and initiate the process of soil formation.
