  • Elements: Understanding Matter Made of Single Atoms
    The form of matter made of one type of atom is called an element.

    Here's why:

    * Elements are the simplest pure substances. They cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.

    * Atoms are the fundamental building blocks of all matter.

    * Each element is defined by the number of protons in its atoms. For example, all gold atoms have 79 protons, and all carbon atoms have 6 protons.

    Examples of elements:

    * Gold (Au)

    * Carbon (C)

    * Oxygen (O)

    * Helium (He)

    * Iron (Fe)
