  • Cytoskeleton Components: Understanding Microtubules, Microfilaments & Intermediate Filaments
The main components of the cytoskeleton are protein filaments. There are three main types of protein filaments that make up the cytoskeleton:

    * Microtubules: These are hollow tubes made of the protein tubulin. They are responsible for cell shape, movement of organelles within the cell, and cell division.

    * Microfilaments: These are thin, solid rods made of the protein actin. They are responsible for cell movement, muscle contraction, and cell division.

    * Intermediate filaments: These are rope-like fibers made of various proteins depending on the cell type. They provide structural support to the cell and help anchor organelles.

While protein filaments are the main components, the cytoskeleton also contains various associated proteins that help regulate its assembly, disassembly, and function.
