  • Viroids: Understanding Infectious Naked RNA Strands - Definition & Differences
Infectious naked strands of RNA are called viroids.

    Here's why:

    * Viroids are the smallest known infectious agents. They are composed solely of a short, circular, single-stranded RNA molecule without a protein coat (hence "naked").

    * Viruses, on the other hand, are more complex and have a protein coat (capsid) surrounding their genetic material, which can be either DNA or RNA.

Therefore, viroids are distinct from viruses in their structure and simplicity.
