  • Cell Membrane: Your Cell's Protective Barrier - Structure & Function
The organelle that separates the cell interior from the environment is the cell membrane (also known as the plasma membrane).

    Here's why:

    * Structure: The cell membrane is a thin, flexible barrier composed of a phospholipid bilayer. This means it has two layers of phospholipids with their hydrophilic (water-loving) heads facing outwards and their hydrophobic (water-fearing) tails facing inwards.

    * Function: It controls what enters and exits the cell, acting as a selective barrier. This is essential for maintaining the cell's internal environment, which is different from the external environment.

    * Protection: It also provides a protective barrier against the outside world.

While other organelles play important roles within the cell, only the cell membrane directly interacts with and separates the cell from its surroundings.
