  • Mitochondria: The Powerhouses That Release Energy from Sugar
The organelles where the stored energy of sugar is released are called mitochondria.

    Here's why:

    * Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell: They are responsible for producing ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy currency of cells.

    * Cellular Respiration: This process breaks down glucose (sugar) in the presence of oxygen, releasing energy that is then used to create ATP.

    * Two main stages: Cellular respiration occurs in two main stages, one of which happens in the mitochondria:

    * Glycolysis: Occurs in the cytoplasm and breaks down glucose into pyruvate.

    * Krebs Cycle and Electron Transport Chain: These occur within the mitochondria and further break down pyruvate, ultimately producing ATP.

So, while the breakdown of sugar begins in the cytoplasm, the primary energy production occurs in the mitochondria.
