  • Understanding Cell Division: Mitosis & Meiosis Explained
The process by which one cell divides to form two new cells is called cell division.

There are two main types of cell division:

    * Mitosis: This is the process of cell division that produces two identical daughter cells from a single parent cell. It's used for growth, repair, and asexual reproduction in many organisms.

    * Meiosis: This is the process of cell division that produces four daughter cells, each with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell. It's used for sexual reproduction to produce gametes (sperm and egg cells).
