  • Understanding Pathogens: 4 Types That Cause Disease
There are four main types of pathogens that can cause diseases:

    1. Bacteria: These are single-celled organisms that can cause a wide range of illnesses, from mild infections like strep throat to serious diseases like tuberculosis.

    2. Viruses: These are even smaller than bacteria and require a host cell to replicate. They can cause many common illnesses like the flu and colds, as well as more serious diseases like HIV/AIDS and Ebola.

    3. Fungi: These are eukaryotic organisms that can cause infections like athlete's foot, yeast infections, and ringworm.

    4. Parasites: These are organisms that live in or on another organism (the host) and benefit at the host's expense. Some common parasites include protozoa (like those that cause malaria), helminths (worms), and ectoparasites (like ticks and fleas).

There are also prions that can cause disease. These are infectious proteins that can cause fatal neurodegenerative diseases. However, they are not considered living organisms.
