  • Prokaryotes: Understanding Bacteria and Archaea - Scientific Classification
There isn't a single scientific name for all prokaryotes. Instead, prokaryotes are divided into two domains:

    * Bacteria: This is the domain that includes most of the bacteria you're likely familiar with, like E. coli and Lactobacillus.

    * Archaea: These are single-celled organisms that were originally thought to be bacteria, but are now known to be distinct from them, with their own unique biochemistry and evolutionary history.

So, while there's no single scientific name for all prokaryotes, Bacteria and Archaea are the two domains that encompass them.
