  • Photosynthesis: The Role of Chloroplasts in Plant Cells
The cells that carry out photosynthesis are called chloroplasts.

    Here's why:

    * Chloroplasts are organelles found in plant cells (and some algae).

    * They contain chlorophyll, a green pigment that absorbs sunlight.

    * This absorbed sunlight energy is used to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose (sugar) and oxygen.

So, while the entire plant participates in photosynthesis, the actual process of converting light energy into chemical energy happens within the chloroplasts.
