    Prokaryotes do not have chromosomes in the same way that eukaryotes do. Instead, their genetic material is organized in a single, circular molecule of DNA called a nucleoid.

    So, technically, prokaryotes have one chromosome, but it's not a distinct structure like eukaryotic chromosomes.
