  • Beyond Sediments: 3 Unexpected Substances That Preserve Organisms
Here are three substances other than sediments in which organisms can be preserved:

    1. Amber: This fossilized tree resin can trap insects and other small organisms, preserving them in remarkable detail.

    2. Ice: Organisms frozen in permafrost or glaciers can be preserved for thousands or even millions of years. This preservation can be so good that sometimes even soft tissues and DNA can be retrieved.

    3. Tar: Natural asphalt seeps can trap animals, preserving their bones and sometimes even soft tissues. The La Brea Tar Pits in California are a famous example of this type of preservation.
