Here's why that wording is a bit misleading:
* Mars has been visible to the naked eye for millennia. Ancient civilizations across the globe, including the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, and Chinese, observed and named Mars.
* NASA studies Mars. NASA, of course, plays a crucial role in our understanding of Mars. They've sent numerous spacecraft to orbit and land on the planet, sending back incredible data and images.
So, while NASA has greatly expanded our knowledge of Mars, it's not accurate to say they "discovered" it.
