  • Magellanic Clouds: Shape, Structure & Galaxy Types Explained
The Magellanic Clouds are not perfectly shaped, but they are generally described as being irregular galaxies.

    Here's why:

    * The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC): While it's often depicted as a "cloud" shape, it's more accurately described as a barred spiral galaxy, with a bar-shaped structure in the center. However, the LMC is quite distorted and lacks the clear spiral arms that are seen in typical spiral galaxies.

    * The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC): The SMC is even more irregularly shaped than the LMC. It is often described as having a distorted elliptical or irregular shape.

So, although they are sometimes called "clouds," the Magellanic Clouds are actually galaxies with irregular shapes due to gravitational interactions with the Milky Way and each other.
