    NASA didn't launch its first satellite. The first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957.

    NASA was founded in 1958, after Sputnik 1, as a direct response to the Soviet Union's technological advancement. NASA's first satellite, Explorer 1, was launched on January 31, 1958.
