While Galileo is famous for his use of the telescope for astronomical observations, it was actually invented in the Netherlands around 1608. The inventor's identity is still debated, but the most likely candidate is Hans Lippershey.

Galileo heard about the invention and quickly built his own improved version, which he used to make groundbreaking discoveries about the Moon, Jupiter's moons, and the Milky Way.
