  • Stellafane Observatory: History & The World's Oldest Amateur Astronomy Convention
Stellafane Observatory wasn't created in the way a traditional observatory is. It's a gathering place for amateur astronomers, and it's more accurately described as a site or convention.

The first Stellafane convention was held in 1926, initiated by Russell W. Porter. It continues to this day, making it one of the oldest amateur astronomy gatherings in the world.

While there are permanent structures at Stellafane, they are not the same as a dedicated observatory building with research-grade telescopes. They primarily serve the needs of the convention attendees and the amateur astronomers who visit the site.
