  • Open Star Clusters: Loose Formations and Distances
The type of star cluster where stars are loosely grouped with wide distances between them is called an open cluster.

    Here's why:

    * Open clusters are generally younger than globular clusters and contain a few hundred to a few thousand stars.

    * They are less tightly bound by gravity than globular clusters, resulting in a more dispersed appearance.

    * The stars in open clusters are typically found in the disk of the Milky Way galaxy.

In contrast, globular clusters are tightly packed spheres of stars, often containing hundreds of thousands or even millions of stars. They are much older than open clusters and are found in the halo of the Milky Way galaxy.
