  • Google Pay: What You Need to Know About the Mobile Payment System
Google Pay, previously known as Android Pay and Google Wallet, is a digital wallet platform and online payment system developed by Google to power in-app, online, and in-person contactless purchases on mobile devices, enabling users to make payments with Android devices, Wear OS, and on the web. It also facilitates the transmission of loyalty cards, offers, gift cards, event tickets and boarding passes. Originally a mobile payment system known as Google Wallet, it transitioned into a digital wallet in 2018, when Google combined its mobile payment service with its digital wallet service called Android Pay. The service was rebranded under its current name at Google I/O 2018.[2]

Google Pay encompasses three separate products which use the same name and branding, but which serve different functions:

Google Pay for Android, a digital wallet and payment system for mobile devices which uses the near-field communication (NFC) API on supported devices to support contactless payments to in-store terminals and transit card readers.

Google Pay for Wear OS, a version of Google Pay designed for Wear OS smartwatches and allows contactless payments when linked to a Google Pay account on a user's smartphone.

Google Pay (website and app checkout) is a payment method designed for online and mobile purchases on supported web browsers and applications, which allows users to save payment information and delivery address for autofill.
