Moon Orbit Around Earth: Orbital Period & Lunar Cycles
The Moon orbits the Earth approximately once every 27.3 days. This is known as the sidereal month.
However, the time it takes for the Moon to go through its phases (from new moon to full moon and back again) is slightly longer, about 29.5 days. This is called the synodic month. The difference is due to the Earth's movement around the Sun.
