  • Light vs. Sound: Do They Need a Medium to Travel?
Sound requires a physical medium in which to travel.

Light can travel through a vacuum, meaning it does not require a physical medium.

    Here's why:

    * Sound is a mechanical wave that travels by vibrating particles in a medium, such as air, water, or solids. The vibrations cause pressure changes that propagate through the medium as sound waves. Without a medium, there are no particles to vibrate, and sound cannot travel.

    * Light is an electromagnetic wave, which means it is made up of oscillating electric and magnetic fields. These fields can exist and propagate even in the absence of matter. This is why light can travel through the vacuum of space.
