  • What is a Wave? Understanding Wave Motion & Types
A wave is the motion of energy through a medium or space.

    Here's why:

    * Waves don't transport matter: Think about a ripple in a pond. The water itself doesn't travel across the pond; it just moves up and down. The energy of the wave is what travels.

    * Waves can travel through different mediums: Waves can travel through air (sound waves), water (water waves), solids (earthquakes), and even a vacuum (light waves).

    * Different types of waves: There are many types of waves, but they all involve the transfer of energy. Some common examples are:

    * Mechanical waves: Require a medium to travel, like sound or water waves.

    * Electromagnetic waves: Do not require a medium, like light or radio waves.

So, while waves might appear to move matter, it's actually the energy that's in motion.
