What is a Force?
A force is a push or pull that can cause a change in an object's motion. This change can be:
* Starting to move: If an object is at rest, a force can make it start moving.
* Stopping: If an object is moving, a force can make it stop.
* Changing direction: A force can make a moving object change its direction.
* Changing speed: A force can make a moving object speed up or slow down.
Balanced Forces:
Balanced forces are forces that are equal in size and opposite in direction. When forces are balanced, they cancel each other out, meaning:
* No net force: The overall force acting on the object is zero.
* No change in motion: The object remains at rest if it was at rest, or continues moving at a constant speed and direction if it was already moving.
Examples of Balanced Forces:
* A book sitting on a table: The force of gravity pulling the book down is balanced by the force of the table pushing the book up.
* A person standing still: The force of gravity pulling the person down is balanced by the force of the ground pushing the person up.
* A car driving at a constant speed: The force of the engine pushing the car forward is balanced by the force of air resistance and friction slowing it down.
Key Point: When forces are balanced, there is no acceleration. This means the object's velocity (speed and direction) stays the same.
