  • James Clerk Maxwell and the Discovery of Electromagnetic Waves
The discovery that electromagnetic waves can travel through empty space at the speed of light is attributed to James Clerk Maxwell.

While he didn't directly observe the waves, his work in the 1860s on Maxwell's equations predicted the existence of these waves and their properties, including their speed.

Later, Heinrich Hertz experimentally confirmed the existence of these waves in the 1880s, validating Maxwell's theoretical work.
