  • Understanding Acceleration: Speed and Direction Changes
There are two main types of change in motion that cause acceleration:

    1. Change in Speed:

    * Speeding up: When an object increases its speed, it is accelerating. This is often referred to as "positive acceleration."

    * Slowing down: When an object decreases its speed, it is also accelerating. This is often referred to as "negative acceleration" or "deceleration."

    2. Change in Direction:

    * Turning: Even if an object maintains a constant speed, changing its direction of motion still constitutes acceleration. This is because acceleration is a vector quantity, meaning it has both magnitude (speed) and direction.

In summary, any change in either speed or direction, or a combination of both, will result in acceleration.
