  • Understanding Wind Speed Measurement: Anemometers Explained
The most common instrument used for measuring wind speed is an anemometer.

There are several types of anemometers, including:

    * Cup anemometer: This is the most common type, consisting of three or four cups that rotate in the wind. The rotation speed is measured and converted to wind speed.

    * Propeller anemometer: This type uses a propeller that spins in the wind, similar to a windmill. The rotation speed is measured and converted to wind speed.

    * Sonic anemometer: This type uses sound waves to measure wind speed. It emits sound pulses and measures the time it takes for them to travel between two points.

    * Hot-wire anemometer: This type measures the cooling effect of wind on a heated wire. The amount of cooling is directly proportional to the wind speed.

The type of anemometer used depends on the application and the desired level of accuracy.
