  • Space Shuttle Speed: How Fast Did It Travel?
The Space Shuttle's maximum orbital speed was about 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour). This is about 22 times the speed of sound. The Shuttle's speed was limited by the need to keep the vehicle within Earth's atmosphere. If the Shuttle went too fast, it would start to skip off the atmosphere and eventually leave orbit.
