  • Continental vs. Maritime Air Masses: Definitions & Characteristics
The two terms used to describe air masses are continental and maritime.

    - Continental air masses originate over land and are associated with low humidity and large temperature ranges. In the winter, continental air masses can be very cold and dry, while in the summer, they can be hot and dry.

    - Maritime air masses originate over the ocean and are associated with high humidity and smaller temperature ranges. In the winter, maritime air masses are usually mild and humid, while in the summer, they are usually cool and humid.
