  • Understanding Light Interaction with Materials: Reflection, Absorption & Transmission
When light strikes a material, there are three main possibilities for what can happen:

    1. Reflection: The light can be reflected off the surface of the material. This is what happens when you see your reflection in a mirror. The light from the light source bounces off the surface of the mirror and back to your eyes.

    2. Absorption: The light can be absorbed by the material. This happens when the light energy is converted into another form of energy, such as heat. This is what happens when you put on a black shirt on a hot day. The black shirt absorbs the light energy from the sun and converts it into heat, which warms your body.

    3. Transmission: The light can be transmitted through the material. This happens when the light waves pass through the material without being absorbed or reflected. This is what happens when you look through a window. The light from the outside passes through the glass of the window and into your eyes.
