  • Newton's First Law: Force & Motion - Speed and Direction Change
A net force must be applied to the object.

An object in motion will continue to move in a straight line at a constant speed unless acted on by an external force. This is known as Newton's first law of motion. In order to change the speed or direction of an object that is already moving, a net force must be applied to the object. This force can be applied in any direction, and the magnitude of the force will determine the amount of change in speed or direction.
