Here's why:

* Living things have certain characteristics: They grow, reproduce, respond to stimuli, maintain homeostasis (a stable internal environment), and are made of cells.

* Hillsides are geological formations: They are formed by the natural processes of erosion, weathering, and deposition of rocks and soil. They don't have any of the characteristics of living things.

While hillsides support life, they are not alive themselves.
