  • Prairie Ecosystem Habitats: Tallgrass & Wetland - Ecosystem Services
Here are two different habitats within a prairie ecosystem:

    1. Tallgrass Prairie: This is the classic image of a prairie, with tall grasses like big bluestem and Indian grass dominating the landscape. These areas are typically found in wetter, more fertile areas of the prairie. They provide habitat for a variety of animals, including bison, elk, prairie dogs, and many bird species.

    2. Wetland Prairie: These prairies are found in areas with standing water for at least part of the year. They may be dominated by grasses and sedges adapted to wet conditions, but also feature a variety of wildflowers, shrubs, and trees. Wetland prairies are important for providing breeding and nesting grounds for many birds, as well as habitat for amphibians, reptiles, and fish.
