  • Understanding Tree Bark: Protection, Insulation & Nutrient Transport
The outside of a tree is covered by bark. Bark is a protective layer that helps the tree:

    * Protect itself from damage: It shields the tree from insects, diseases, fire, and extreme weather.

    * Regulate temperature: Bark helps insulate the tree, keeping it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

    * Transport water and nutrients: The inner layer of bark (called the phloem) carries sugars and other nutrients produced by the leaves down to the rest of the tree.

Beyond the bark, you might also find:

    * Buds: Small, dormant structures that contain the beginnings of leaves, flowers, or branches.

    * Branches: Outgrowths of the main trunk that support the leaves.

    * Leaves: The primary site of photosynthesis, where the tree makes its food.

    * Lichen: A symbiotic organism that grows on the bark and can sometimes look like a colorful, leafy growth.
