* You and me: We're made of matter, mostly water and other organic compounds.
* The air we breathe: A mix of gases like nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide.
* The ground we stand on: Composed of rocks, soil, and minerals.
* The stars and planets: Made up of hydrogen, helium, and other elements.
* The water we drink: A compound of hydrogen and oxygen.
Matter exists in various states, the most common being:
* Solid: Has a definite shape and volume, like a rock or ice.
* Liquid: Has a definite volume but takes the shape of its container, like water or oil.
* Gas: Has no definite shape or volume, like air or helium.
* Plasma: A superheated gas where electrons are stripped from atoms, like the sun.
Even though matter is everywhere, there are also vast regions of space that are largely empty of matter, like the space between galaxies.
