  • Species Extinction: What Happens When Organisms Can't Adapt?
When the environment changes and organisms don't adapt, they face a serious threat to their survival, and the following can happen:

    * Extinction: This is the most likely outcome. If the environment changes too quickly or drastically, and a species doesn't possess the necessary traits to cope with the new conditions, it may simply die out. This could be due to lack of food, water, shelter, or the inability to escape predators.

    * Decline in population: Even if a species doesn't go extinct outright, a lack of adaptation can lead to a significant decline in population size. This makes the species more vulnerable to further environmental changes, disease, or competition from other species.

    * Limited geographical range: Species might be forced to move to areas where the environment is more suitable, leading to a smaller geographical range and potentially isolation.

    * Evolutionary pressure: While not adapting in the short term, the environmental change can create a strong selective pressure. This pressure might, over time, lead to the evolution of new traits that allow some individuals to survive in the changed environment. However, this process can take many generations and might not be fast enough to save the species.

    Examples:

    * The Dodo: This flightless bird went extinct after the arrival of humans and introduced species to its island home. It lacked the ability to adapt to the new predators and competitors.

    * The Tasmanian Tiger: This marsupial predator was driven to extinction due to habitat loss and hunting by humans. It couldn't adapt to the changing environment.

    * The Polar Bear: Climate change is melting the sea ice, the polar bear's main hunting ground. While some individuals are adapting, the long-term impact remains uncertain, and the species faces a serious threat.

It's important to note that evolution is not a guarantee of survival. Some species simply lack the genetic variation or the time to adapt to rapid environmental changes. The ability to adapt depends on the specific traits of the species, the severity and speed of the environmental change, and other factors like competition and predation.
